Default Upgrading Laptops?

I'm confused on this. I have a laptop and I'm wanting to put 1 gig of ram in it and a new video card soon, but almost everyone I've talked to they said stuff like "it's hard to do" "it's to expensive" and "you can't do it at all"

So does anyone here know if it's possible cause I don't see why not.
